OPEN WOUND? HERE IS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO FIRST
By Ifeanyichukwu Egwu
A small cut, scratch, or wound can happen when you least expect it. A kitchen accident, a little fall, a sharp object, or even a child playing can leave the skin broken.
And when that happens, many people immediately turn to home remedies.
One popular traditional suggestion is to slice an onion and rub it around or directly on the wound because onions contain compounds that have shown antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies.
But here is something important to remember:
🧅 DO NOT RUB RAW ONION OR ONION JUICE DIRECTLY ON AN OPEN WOUND
Even though onions have interesting natural compounds, raw onion is not a recommended substitute for proper wound care. Applying it directly to broken skin can cause irritation and may introduce contaminants into the wound.
So, what should you do instead?
💧 STEP 1: CLEAN THE WOUND
Wash your hands first. Then gently rinse the wound with clean running water. This helps remove dirt and other contaminants.
🩹 STEP 2: PROTECT IT
After cleaning, gently pat the surrounding area dry and cover the wound with a clean sterile dressing or plaster.
Keeping a minor wound clean and protected can support normal healing.
👀 STEP 3: WATCH FOR WARNING SIGNS
Do not ignore a wound that becomes increasingly painful, swollen, red, hot, or begins producing pus. Fever or red streaks spreading from the wound can also be warning signs of infection.
Seek medical attention if these symptoms appear.
👨👩👧 FOR CHILDREN, BE EXTRA CAREFUL
Children can easily turn a small scratch into a bigger problem by touching or scratching the wound repeatedly.
Clean the wound properly, cover it and monitor it until it heals.
🌿 NATURAL DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN SAFE
There is nothing wrong with appreciating traditional knowledge and the potential benefits of natural ingredients. However, when the skin is broken, safety should come first.
Your kitchen may contain many useful ingredients, but an open wound needs proper wound care rather than untested substances applied directly to it.
Clean it. Protect it. Watch it. Get medical help when necessary.
❤️ Your health is too important to leave to guesswork.
